Northfield is actively addressing localized flooding issues that have affected various neighborhoods. These flooding events, distinct from the more familiar Cannon River overflows, are often due to undersized or inadequate infrastructure.
In 2020, the city updated its Surface Water Model and identified several areas prone to such flooding. Following discussions with the City Council, a project was initiated to construct new storm sewers and install backflow preventers in the most affected regions. The construction phase is scheduled from May to August 2026, with final improvements expected to be accepted by December 2026.
To ensure community involvement, the city has opted for individual meetings with affected residents, recognizing that each property may face unique challenges. Residents have been notified by mail to schedule these meetings.
